 Janis A Sherwood was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area in California. This is where she received her early dance training, theater training  teaching experience and performing career. At a very young age she began training in Berkeley at the Zurflu ballet school and later at the East Bay Music center. She also began daily classes at John F. Kennedy High School and began teaching there when she was a senior. After graduation she continued her dance education and performing experience with Contra Costa college, Richmond Ballet, and a private studio. She also started a dance program at the Richmond YMCA teaching dance, creative movement and fitness.

After moving to Alabama in her  20s, Janis danced and performed at the Montgomery School of fine arts ( now the Alabama Dance Theater) and Auburn University in Montgomery. She also taught classes for the learning arts Amory, and Alabama State University for the advancement of the  arts program. Additionally she began a dance program for the Montgomery YMCA where she was also in charge of their corporate fitness program.

 Janis began dancing with Ballet UAB in 1984, Where she was a Ballet major with a performance concentration. She trained and performed there from 1984-1988 and again from 1992-1997. She studied Ballet with the renowned Ballet master Stephan Grebel, Melanie Grebel and modern dance under Edith Barnes. While at UAB she also trained under such well known teachers and choreographers as Fred Sieretta, Martin Freedman, and Marcus Alford. Janis has her BFA (pending) in Ballet and with a minor in Art. Due to her outstanding academic record at UAB she was awarded A fellowship and was chosen to teach Jazz under the UABs Masters program, In which she traveled and taught master classes in the Birmingham area public schools. She was also an instructor and choreographer for UABs youth ballet from 1994-1997.

Although classically trained Janis has studied and performed extensively in Jazz, Hip Hop, lyrical and modern dance. As well as learning other dance disciplines, including Tap, west African, Haitian /Cuban, Cuban salsa and more. Janis has continued her dance and teacher training by regularly taking classes, workshops and seminars in California and here in the Southeast. She has had the opportunity to train under some of the countries top teachers and choreographers. Such as Tyce Diorio, Brian Friedman, Twitch, Gustavo Vargas, Chebar Williams, Shelia Barker, Eddie Garcia, and many more.

In addition to her dance training, Janis studied extensively in the Theater Arts and has many drama and musical theater performances to her credit. Her experiences  includes being chosen for the prestigious And renowned Theater Arts Institute at Northwestern University in 1977. There she was the lead in their company production under the direction of John Williams. Janis also received the Degree Of Excellence from the National Forensics League and both State and National qualifications in Dramatic Interpretation. She was also a finalist for multiple years in the Golden Gate Speech Association.

Janis has been teaching dance for over 40 years and has trained thousands of individuals. Many of her students have gone on to careers in the dance and the performing arts. Including professional actors, dancers and models, fine arts schools, college dance programs, as teachers, choreographers, performers and studio owners. She has worked and choreographed for many private studios, public schools, for television and community theaters.

 In addition to her performing arts career she is also a visual artist. Her and her husband travel the country with their art studio EclectArt Studios.   Janis currently resides in Alabaster with her Husband, Michael J. Sherwood. They have five Children and six grandchildren .
